Why We Chose Cane Sugar Over Artificial Sweeteners
Jul 11, 2025
– And Why It Tastes (and Feels) Better
In a world of zero-calorie promises and sweeteners you can’t pronounce, we decided to go the other direction: real cane sugar, in moderation.
At Blue Hound Brew, we believe in keeping things simple, clean, and familiar. That’s why you won’t find sucralose, aspartame, or stevia in our canned lattes — just smooth cold brew, organic pasture-raised milk, and a touch of real cane sugar.
Here’s why we made that call — and why we think it matters.
1. Cane Sugar Is Straightforward — and Recognizable
Look at most ingredient labels today and you’ll see a parade of unfamiliar names: acesulfame potassium, erythritol, monk fruit extract... the list goes on. Even though some of these are technically “natural,” they’re often highly processed, hard to digest, or leave behind an odd aftertaste.
Cane sugar? People know what it is. It’s simple, natural, and has been used for centuries. There’s something reassuring about that.
2. Artificial Sweeteners Can Confuse the Body
Many artificial and zero-calorie sweeteners send mixed signals to the brain. They taste sweet, but they don’t deliver calories — which may cause your body to respond unpredictably. Some studies even suggest they could increase cravings or interfere with metabolism.
We’d rather give you a small, satisfying dose of real sugar that your body recognizes and can process the way nature intended.
3. Taste Matters — A Lot
Let’s be honest — a lot of artificially sweetened drinks taste... off. They might hit the “sweet” note, but they don’t round out the flavor. Worse, many leave a metallic or chemical aftertaste that clashes with coffee.
That’s not what a latte should taste like.
By using a modest amount of cane sugar, we’re able to highlight the richness of our organic milk and the natural chocolatey notes of our specialty cold brew. It’s smooth, balanced, and leaves no weird finish — just a clean, café-style experience.
4. We Keep It in Check
We’re not dumping spoonfuls of sugar into every can. Each Blue Hound Brew latte is lightly sweetened — just enough to enhance the flavor, not overpower it. We keep our sugar content thoughtful and intentional.
If you're someone who drinks several sugary drinks a day, it’s smart to cut back. But if you’re looking for a treat that’s real, honest, and actually tastes good, we believe a touch of cane sugar is the way to go.
5. Clean Label = Clean Experience
At the end of the day, we want you to feel good about what you’re drinking — and what’s on the label. Cane sugar is something your grandma would recognize. And in a time when “natural” can mean 20 different things, we like that kind of clarity.
In a Can Full of Real Ingredients, Cane Sugar Belongs
We’re proud to be part of a shift toward honest, intentional ingredients — ones that taste good, work well together, and don’t try to trick your body.
If you’ve ever taken a sip of a sugar-free coffee and thought, “Something’s not quite right,” you’re not alone. That’s why we kept it simple. Cold brew. Organic milk. A little cane sugar. And nothing you need to Google.
Taste the difference. Feel the difference. That’s what real should be.
