Why Some Companies Add Oils to Their Lattes — and Why We Don’t

If you’ve ever flipped over a canned latte or café drink and noticed added oils in the ingredient list, you’re not alone. It’s a common practice in the beverage world — but at Blue Hound Brew, it’s one we intentionally avoid.

Here’s why.

Why Oils Show Up in Lattes in the First Place

Many large beverage companies add oils (like sunflower, canola, or coconut oil) to their lattes for a few reasons:

1. Texture & “Creaminess”
Oils help mimic the mouthfeel of dairy. When companies use lower amounts of milk or shelf-stable alternatives, oils can create a thicker, smoother texture.

2. Shelf Stability
Oils can help prevent separation in canned or bottled drinks, keeping the product visually consistent over time — especially during long distribution cycles.

3. Cost Efficiency
Oils are often cheaper than higher-quality milk, cream, or coffee. Adding a small amount can improve body without increasing ingredient costs.

While these choices make sense for mass-produced drinks, they aren’t the choices we want to make.

Why Blue Hound Brew Doesn’t Use Added Oils

At Blue Hound Brew, our philosophy is simple: coffee should taste good because of what’s in it — not what’s added to fix it.

1. We Rely on Real Ingredients
Our lattes get their body and richness from quality coffee, real milk (or thoughtfully chosen alternatives), and careful brewing — not oils used as shortcuts.

2. Cleaner Flavor, Cleaner Finish
Added oils can coat your palate, muting coffee’s natural character and sometimes leaving a lingering aftertaste. Without oils, our lattes taste cleaner, brighter, and more balanced.

3. Transparency Matters to Us
When you pick up a Blue Hound Brew latte, the ingredient list is short and familiar. You shouldn’t need to decode what’s in your coffee.

4. Crafted, Not Engineered
We approach our drinks the same way we approach a great café latte: dialed-in, intentional, and honest. No stabilizers masquerading as creaminess. No fillers doing heavy lifting.

The Blue Hound Difference

We’re not trying to make the longest-lasting latte on a warehouse shelf.
We’re trying to make the best-tasting latte in your hands.

That means:

No added oils

No unnecessary fillers

No compromises on flavor

Just coffee the way it should be — simple, thoughtful, and damn good.

Because at the end of the day, if your latte needs oil to taste right, it probably wasn’t brewed right to begin with.
