The Secret: How We Use Heat, Not Chemicals, to Keep It Fresh
When people hear a dairy product is shelf-stable for a year, they naturally think of long ingredient lists full of stabilizers and preservatives. But at Blue Hound Brew, our mission is "Canned Coffee. Uncanned Quality"—meaning we keep that list clean.
We achieve our amazing 12-month shelf life without preservatives by using a powerful yet simple process called Retort Sterilization.
🧪 What is Retort? (It’s Not a Chemical Additive)
Retort is a food processing method that relies entirely on controlled heat and pressure inside the sealed can. It works like this:
The Can is Sealed: We fill and seal the can with our freshly brewed cold brew, organic milk, and natural flavors.
The "Cook": The sealed cans are placed in a large, pressurized cooker (the retort chamber) and subjected to high heat for a precise amount of time.
Total Sterilization: This process completely sterilizes the contents by killing all microorganisms, including bacteria and spores, that could cause spoilage or require chemical preservatives to suppress.
This creates a commercially sterile product inside an airtight container. Because nothing can grow inside the sealed can, the latte stays perfectly fresh and safe for a year or more. It's the same method that makes canned soups, vegetables, and many shelf-stable milk products possible.
The Result: A Clean Label You Can Trust
By using retort, we ensure that every can delivers the pure flavor of:
Specialty-Grade Coffee
Organic, Pasture-Raised Whole Milk
Real Maple/Caramel
...and absolutely NO artificial sweeteners, artificial flavors, or chemical preservatives.
It’s our commitment to quality, backed by science!
